New Education Initiative for West Reading.
Councillor Chris Maskell, the Mayor of Reading officially opened a new learning centre in West Reading on Saturday 15th March at 10.00 am.

Established by SPAAK Education Ltd, a Reading based business headed up by local teacher Joe Akem-Che, the new centre was then opened to the public for viewing from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th March. This new "Out of School" learning centre at Unit 2, 344 Oxford Road, RG30 1AG is the brainchild of a group of teachers who have evolved the idea of a very broadly based support facility for students aged 5-19.

SPAAK, an acronym based on the names of the founding group, is strategically located in the demographically diverse West Reading area. The centre will by day, support pupils who are struggling with mainstream education and in that context will be supporting local schools with this vital social issue, particularly focusing on the excluded pupils. At all other times the centre will become a community learning resource for every area of learning providing one-on-one tutoring to support and challenge the "Gifted and Talented" for 5-19 year olds....

The Centre is setup to work with LEAs and Schools (A) and Private individuals (B), providing the community with temporary educational services.
SPAAK Learning and revision packages raise achievement through exam practice and associated revision at a wide range of key stages. All CORE curriculum subjects are covered specifically at ALL levels, but the skills it develops are very transferable.
As few as 10 task hours (total) use per Learner has been shown to have a significant impact on exam grades.

The SPAAK Learning Centre provides education for pupils aged between 5 - 19 who are:
1.struggling in their mainstream placement, or
2.new to the Reading area, or
3.Are out of mainstream education, for whatever reason.

Pupils are referred to SPAAK from ChESS (Children Education Support Service). Discussions are at an advanced stage with local schools, Education Welfare Service and the LEA (CSS and SCT) and other agencies for referrals to us.
Once contact is established, suitable teaching times are arranged with the parents or guardians. We can provide tuition in the SPAAK centre, pupils' home or an agreed suitable place.
